Hi there, I am new here on this forum, formerly a life member on BPN, this site was recommended to me. I am very interested in comments and learning from others on hand of man style photography. I dont know where to start so will start with this photograph, taken near Addy Washington (I am a Canadian though, lol). I was using a Canon 5D II with the 24-105, at dusk.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Its very nice to feel welcomed! I first emailed a moderator to make sure my building sizes were not too overwhelming. I have a lot of shots that are pretty much 90% hand of man and 10% nature. But also lots of florals and landscapes. Yes, I am a country person. I am a biologist and a toxicologist nearing retirement, and I live in the mountains north of the border above Spokane. This shot was taken in the Williams Lake valley between Rossland BC and Spokane Washington. I will indeed post more closeups of the sort of rough-hewn farm stuff I like to shoot. I have a thing for falling apart old shacks and outbuildings, and old equipment in the weeds. Grew up in a long line of British Columbian ranchers and farmers.....so its a kind of sickness in the family. :wavey:

Welcome. I see lots of areas that could use further study, the old car, the pump house and of course the barn.

Welcome to NPN. Cool first post. Great light and awesome subject matter. The highlights in the car look a little clipped. I'd love to see some other compositions from the area. For this one, I'd suggest a small crop down on the sky. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks so much, and especially the suggestions for changes, I agree the car is clipped, I was thinking I should have tried HDR, because a lot of this is underexposed and the car of course is a bit blown out. antoher approach would have been to use Shadows Highlights, but then I havent figured out how to get this to work without washing the warm out of the lighting.

Eva, thanks for reminding me I must comment on others. I will do so.

All the best, I am impressed with the number of comments!

wow what a great subject as a whole with so many other independent subjects. Some of the things that really draws my attention is the door to the loft. the gas pump and the arched roof on the small outbuilding. Even the two fenceposts in the forground kind of mimick the paint on the hood of the car. I really love this. Perhaps you shoot a winter seen of the same angle?

Welcome Katherine! If this is your first post, you're one to watch!

As for the image, on my screen it seems a tad over saturated. No big. It's possible that it would have more impact if it would be cropped a bit tighter, say from shortly under the old car, and losing a fair amount of the sky, like just above the blue streak.. I don't know if you are a purist, some are/some aren't, but with the crop you'd likely need to clone out the tops of the posts.

Hi, I am overwhelmed by the number of comments and the kindness of people here! Its interesting about oversat, its as shot re saturation, I dont move that filter in camera raw, or light room, for this reason. The light in the mountains here in midsummer near dusk is very rich. Its easy for it to get blown out, and I cant do much at noon, but in the morning or at the end of the day in summer...wow. And another wow for the response. I hope I can live up to your expectations. I probably will post again soon in landscapes and here in this category again. But meanwhile I think I should return the favour more, as Eva has pointed out to me.

All the best,
