Kingfisher

One from last years Kingfisher project, I think I've blown the whites, which is usually the case with me and KF's.

Any views on the sharpness would be appreciated, not sure if I've given the large version enough?

1/250th @ f8 iso400 ( 75% of FF, Not set up or baited, and no cloning has been done )

All C&C most welcome and thanks for looking.

Okay, chest area soft focus I have no problem with it. I like the texture of the sticks and the spider web which lends to the all around good projection of the bird.

You can probably save the whites from the raw file depending on where the histogram sits on the right side. You can also do a number of simple post processing tricks to reduce the intensity of the whiteness! In any case, a wonderful perch and pose with great colors and lovely lighting. You may also want to double check the whites once converted to sRGB as that seems to cook 'em a bit more.

The whites do look just a bit hot, Andy. I think a bit more sharpening might help with some of the brown areas, though I suspect that's mostly due to the fineness of the plumage. Beautiful pose and bg.

Gorgeous image with nice colors. Just wish this was maybe at f/5.6 to render the BG a little more OOF

Great detail in the larger image Andy. I always under expose by -1/3 or -2/3 with species that have white patches in their plumage.

cheers

Andy, I agree with Rob's tip on underexposing birds with white. I do the same...but since the white is so minimal on this bird, I don't see the whites as a big problem...especiially since you have detail on the edges of where the whites meet the other colors. If it were mine, I would sharpen a bit more mostly on the chest feathers and a tad more on the eye....especially on the web version.
BTW, terrific shot! I really like the comp and colors. I can't get within 150 feet of a kingfisher, so much better than any kingfisher shot I have. :toast:

Your right about the exposure, Rob. I need to improve my post processing skills too.

Cheers guys
