Visited Tent Rocks, NM (a newly paved roadway for easy access). Fun and easy hike, great day visit while I was in Albuquerque for my sis's retirement party (she quit USFS after 35 yrs of solid service, overhead fire teams, NEPA, etc...).

Handheld, Nikon 17-35mm, Nikon D300, 1/60s, F13.

IKen - i like the blend of warm and cool tones here. The leading rocks on the canyon floor provide an interesting element that I haven't seen in other canyon shots. I'm not sure if you needed a high ISO for handholding, but it seems there is some noise? in the shadows-though the gritty nature that is created in the bluish rocks is appealing to me. Possibly some noise combined with sharpening for the web? ANyway. cool shot. :toast:

Hi Ken,

Really cool comp and colors. Thanks for bringing light to this place, I had never heard of it before. The background looks perfect, but the fg looks underexposed. Maybe you can duel process and repost. It's next to impossible to bracket and blend without a tripod. Congrats to your family and sister and thanks for her service.

Have a great day!

Ken- I love the contrasting colors and textures in this shot. Very elegant composition, too.

You must have used a fairly high iso to manage 1/60 and f13 in these deep shadows. Unfortunately the noise shows. Did you happen to capture any where you sacrificed some depth of field for a lower iso?

Thanks for comments. I never expected to do any outdoor shooting this trip...just shows ...always be prepared and bring the tripod. Plus when hiking w/3 other non-photogs... well, forget timing and light.... you just snap and run to catch up. This was a lark...full of noise. ISO was 200. But, be sure, I will return on another visit and bring my tripod ...there is super potential for some fine sunset or sunrise shots. Tent Rocks also known as Hoodoos. One hour from Albuquerque...hidden treasure.

Looks like you made the most of shooting without a tripod! Really nice composition with plenty of details in both the highlights and shadows. I'd try brightening the darker tones.

Other than the noise and lack of real sharpness, I like the shot. Comp works very well, the glow on the back wall is terrific, and even like how the FG seems "underexposed." I'd never heard of this place either, hopefully you'll have a chance to get back here with the proper equipment someday.

Definitely re-shoot this, but it is nice. I like the combo of cools and warms.

Wow, this is a great place better portrayed then some of the neon stuff we see from the usual Southwest slots.

Neat place. I really like the textures in the dark areas.
