Oaks in Winter White

I raced up to the valley on sunday in hope that it would be snowing, and it was! Ran around like a kid in a candy shop for a few hours while the snow was falling. I think it had stopped by the time I was in this spot. I've wanted some wintery snow covered tree images for a long time now, so I'm happy. Lon came up and meet me the next morning and we had a nice day shooting together. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for your thoughts. Larger version also included.

D200,
18-70mm,
1/80th @ F/9.5, -1/2 stop exposure,

Thanks,
Chris

Love the wintry mix and boy that is a cool oak.

Thanks for sharing

A beautiful winter scenic, Chris! I went up Monday morning. There
was still snow, but I didn't get anything as good as this.

There's something extremely special about Yosemite in snow. The valley takes on a whole different mood, it's usually so full of people it buzzes with the energy of thousands of people frantically trying to see it all, while we photographers try to tune out the high frequency interference and quietly compose. In the snow it's entirely unnecessary, the place it deserted except for the few extreme weather photogs and wild purists. The hush is audible and the crunch of a boot on crusty snow sounds like a rifle report in the silence. Chris this is what your image captures for me, nice you could finally realize a dream.

The snow creates some great textures. Larger version definitely needed to appreciate them. Thanks for including it.

Chris, I like this a lot. The fresh fallen snow on that oak is great, as is the snow covered log in the immediate foreground. Thanks for posting the large version, you really must view it to appreciate this one, as the smaller post does it no justice. Must have been great to witness in person. :toast:

Hi Chris, the answer was "yes"..

Beautiful image! Fresh snow on trees are always very aesthetic and you captured them in the right moment. That (oak?) works great to add character to the image.

I can really relate to the kid in a candy store feeling when coming upon scenes like this. The trees themselves are interesting but the backdrop of textured cliffs is what makes it Yosemite. Beautiful image.

Chris, This is a wonderful snow scene. You did a great job capturing this, and it has such a nice feel and mood. Your comp is perfect and I really like the snow on the rock in the bg. Large version is beautiful.

A lovely winter image. This really has to be viewed large to be fully appreciated. I love the graceful bend in the tree and the stark, snow covered branches. Very nice Chris.

Another beautiful pic Chris. The large version is a real treat. I think you have done a great job at distinguishing the snow on the cliffs and the snow on the trees, very subtle but very important to making this a great photo. Well done. Cheers

I appreciate the detailed trees, but most striking for me is that you give us just an idea of the dramatic background!

Oh yes this is a great spot, isn't it? The tones you've got going on are really nice. And I love the backdrop of the valley walls.

Normally I think that all the fallen trees on the ground clash with this scene, but with those covered in snow that problem doesn't exist :toast:

Love the colors working behind the trees. They seem to provide an unassuming grace for the oak.

The larger view is definitely a must see Chris. Excellent B&W with wonderful tonal range. Two of the trees look like jesters to me. Beautiful work.

Chris,

Late to the party as usual... but I wanted to let you know what a beautiful image you have captured here. You know I've been photographing this tree for many years and I must say you've captured a moment I've yet to see. Like Guy, it's really the background cliffs that help set and frame the scene and make this a complete image. Even the fallen log slightly visible at the bottom breaking up the snow makes a difference.

I'm so glad that you were able to get your snow covered trees in Yosemite. As I kick myself for not being there at the same time.

Nothing like running around after a fresh snowfall. I love the way the new snow makes the tree shapes pop. While I enjoy the inclusion of the distant cliffs for the sense of place they lend the image, I also could see this working well as a pano without them, I think. Nice work, Chris.
