Christmas in Yellowstone

by Floris van Breugel

Gallery: Man & NaturePosted January 5, 20111,107 views34 comments
My parents and I spent the holidays in Yellowstone, skiing around the Bison, geysers, etc. The weather was not terribly favorable (was it anywhere in the the US??), but we did have 2 days of nice sunny skies. This was my favorite image from the trip, my father skiing past the erupting Penta Geyser in the late afternoon. 92 exposures to get it 'right', and a fair bit of processing to get the sun flare looking nice.

Thanks for your thoughts!

WOW Floris! This is stunning, ghostly, and ethereal...... just amazing. Saw your post on ESS first but had to jump back here after your description. One of my favorites of yours for sure!

Wow! Just amazing, and that being your Dad makes it even more so. Great shot and more than worth all the exposures. Wonderful work, Floris. Hope you have a great new year.

This is just spectacular. All the time you spent on processing really paid off. From the thumbnail I thought there were snow-covered trees.

Floris, wow. This is really quite amazing. You can feel the scale and energy here. I might prefer the figure to have been darker.

Beautiful capture Floris! The comp and lighting really set off the geyser and mist. All the effort and work were well worth it. Great job!

I have yet to make it into the interior in winter, but this is still beyond anything I'd imagine. Thank your dad for us.

Thanks folks!

Aaron - this was actually the last of the 92 exposures.. my dad had been posing, but by this time I guess he thought I was done and started skiing again, luckily everything came together on the last one! The trick was to get the light wind to blow the mist in the right direction, and timing the burst.

According to wikipedia, this geyser goes off up to twice a day, with eruptions lasting 2-30 hours.. I've only seen it go off once.

I saw this one on your blog and was immediately very happy for you. This is a statement image for sure, and I love that you were able to include your father. Did he have to cooperate through all 92 takes?
