Happy New Year, everyone!!! Thought I'd start things off with a bang, so here's a shot of a large lava bubble exploding... over a hundred feet across and expanding. hehe, yes, I was using a telephoto for this! And, as for the title, this was actually shot on the 4th of July, hence the spelling in the title.

Canon 1Ds Mark III, 100-400, f/7, 1/500, ISO 125

All feedback welcome and appreciated! Mahalo!!!

Aloha,
Bruce

Howzit Bruce!

That is just mind numbing!!! This ain't a little splash folks more like a 5000lb bomb exploding! Almost looks like you used flash (but you didn't of course). Killer extreme shot!

Original. :toast:

Nice catch. Wish I could have more on the top and on the right. The lava explosion feels cramped. I feel "cheated", because my eye wants more BG. I know, very selfish of me!

. Very festive, indeed. :toast:

The sense of scale here is difficult to comprehend. My absolute favorite part of this photo are the specular highlights on the airborne lava. They give the appearance of a studio lit sculpture made of plastic.

Whoa! Just love the stop action here and what a great shape. Looks almost plastic. Incredible. Just need a "buy now" button.

I have never seen an image like this before. Truly crazy photo and one that looks a bit too close for comfort!

I agree with the 'crazy' 'unique' 'incredible' comments, but ive got to say that with a different presentation this could have been one of the best shots ive seen recently on ESS. The problem is that there is too little (or too much) fg/mountain in the comp. Crop this so you are left with the top 2/3 and right 1/2, and you have a killer abstract shot. Incorportate more of the fg (hopefully in an interesting way) and you probably have a killer shot. The best photography isn't about catching incredible conditions or moments--its about capturing those moments in a way that optmizes the message. I hope this doesnt come off as negative--its meant as encouragement. This is definitely a cool shot and i enjoy it quite a bit!

Incredible and spectacular image... The lava has a plastic appearance which makes it almost iper-realistic... Wonderful.

Thanks for the kind words, all! More than any other image, this one evokes comparisons... to paint, blood, plastic, just as some of you have mentioned. The two others that come from kids are tomato soup and ketchup! Lava bubbles are extremely rare and unpredictable, so we were extremely blessed to witness the episode. Mahalo!
