The Witching Hour (plus pano crop)

Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND

As I trudged up the hill for my only morning shoot at this iconic location, I wondered what it would take to capture something unique. When a heavy fog rolled in and the sunrise was reflected as pools of blood at the bottom, I knew that this was it. A magical experience.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Canon 5DMkII, 16-35mm 2.8L.

Fascinating scene! I would much prefer more of a pano verison, w/o the rock at bottom which i find a bit distracting from the uber-cool bg. The blue sat also seems a tad strong, but it's effective (see Landscape Forum for a discussion of this issue  )
Merry Christmas to you, too, Kah Kit--i look forward to seeing more of your great photos in 2011! :wavey:

I thought someone might suggest a pano. So here is a crop.

Magical indeed. The reflected colors are both eerie and beguiling. Perfect title.

A magical image too. You captured this so well. The pano version works very nice with this and that was my first feeling too. After seeing both I think both work very nice. Might lean with the pano a little more. Either way, this is wonderful. Merry Christmas to you too, Kah kit.

Great, Kah Kit! I prefer the full frame, though I would darken or clone the bright white liken. The blue is a little too strong for my liking, and the bright patch of pink in the middle a little too distracting with its intensity, but that's my personal taste. Were it mine, I'd look at toning down the colors and contrast to fit the foggy mood more, though I would have to play with it alot to decide how to process it best.

Thanks Doug. I might actually just clone the lichen out as they are a bit distracting. The intensity of the pinks were what made the scene magical and it wasn't one of those typical foggy low contrast situations; I've processed it the scene to how I felt at the time, enhancing the blues to contrast with the reds.

Kah Kit,

No doubt this was a magical moment for you to witness these converging conditions. At least for me though, the presented result isn't working for me like much of your work does. I'm trying less and less to try and second guess color - especially saturation, but the purple band of fog/clouds up top is a little too much for me. Also, you didn't mention, but it looks like a GND was used and I'm not sure it was necessary. The big rock in the UR just isn't adding anything. Surely, breaks in the clouds/fog could create light and dark areas, but the balance of light just seems a bit off to me.

I wish I could say better, but we gotta call it like we see it right?

Now, the pano crop I think is much better because it reduces the imbalance of light and actually the dark rock interestingly less of an issue for me.

Merry Christmas!

A beatiful scene and really well captured. The fog adds such a strong mood to the scene. I also love the rich colors.

Out of the two, I prefer the original over the pano version.

The colors are fantastic...but do you have a version without the right hand rock? It bothers me-I don't think it was necessary, it gets in the way. Maybe a crop to get rid of most of it and then clone out the rest. Beautiful colors. That's my take.

Mysterious and ancient Celtic power portrayed. I mentioned before folk will not believe the Scottish purples. Glorious light and for the record I agree about the right hand rock I crop it to the extent that the cliff is never taller than the central pinnacle.
