Starfires

For me there are few more profound wilderness experiences than walking away from a warm campfire and a circle of friends and gazing up at a sky alive with stars. This scene shows the center of the galaxy softly glowing with the light of billions of suns and luminous nebulae above our little camp in the Dolly Sods wilderness in West Virginia. It was taken in late summer when the milky way is above the southern horizon in the evening.

any comment or critique is welcome

This is a cool shot, Robert. I enjoy looking at this. Looks like a great place to sit by the camp fire too. I also think this looks great with the fire cropped off and just showing the right 2/3 of the image. You can have 2 different pictures here if you like. Nice work!

Yeah, I got a comment Robert... your sky looks GREAT, your Milky Way is brighter than mine and your blacks are richer yet you shot a full stop less than me. What did you do in post to get such a great sky?? Let me know who to make the check out to.

Great comp, beautiful image to print huge over the fireplace. My only nit is maybe to burn down the campfire a bit (no pun intended!), it pulls me away from the sky a little stronger than maybe it should.

The night skies in the Bighorns are probably some of my fondest childhood memories, so I totally understand where you are coming from Robert. I think you captured the mood and sense of wonder in the wilderness well.

Puts a person in the mood to go camping. I agree with Paul, the fire is a little to bright for the rest of the comp.

The large image is really impressive. Beautiful image. Amazing sky. I agree with the others, I would bring down the brightness a little bit on the campsite.

Very effective composition for a man and nature image. Man on one side trying to keep out the night and nature on the other side making all those efforts seem puny. The fire might be a tad too bright, but I find it much less distracting in the larger version. Besides, that brightness seems to be part of the point of this story. If anything, I might try a localized adjustment to make the fire area warmer.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I agree that the campfire area is too bright, particularly in the 720p version and have toned it down to better balance the scene.
