Rhythm and Rime

Frosty aspens on Boulder Mountain, Utah, during some snowy wind gusts. This one really doesn't translate well to the tiny jpg, so please check out the LARGE version.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Holy smokes that's a beauty! The low-lying mist puts this over the top.

Lovely how you accented the whites by going for this blue toning.

Love the mood here... Like Andreas stated, the blue toning works well in this image... It looks like a terribly difficult scene to convey, but I think you did a pretty good job of it.

Gorgeous Floris! This mist/fog really adds a great atmospheric element to the scene. I'm thinking too that this would be great even without the mist.

I think the blues are very fitting as well, although the hue is more towards purple. I don't know if shaving a little red out of the midtones would take care of that? But regardless, it's a matter of choice and intent as well, so it's certainly your call. But wow, what a great combination of rime-covered delicate branches and the structure of the trunks.

Just wonderful.

Glad you got such great conditions on your visit, Floris. This is superb. I especially like the hints of blue in the shadows.

I love these intimate images, all about color and form with an ethereal quality from the blowing snow. The glow in the bottom half seems a bit much to me--don't know if it's partly processing or all from the reality of the blowing snow, but if some was added in processing I'd tone it down.

Dude this is awesome I am so jealous. So this is how it's done, I guess it's back to the drawing board for me. What no focus stacking for this one? I really enjoy the blue tones and the fog puts it over the top for me. Cheers

I love the comp., contrast of white rime, cool tones, and processing. I have to say I think I would prefer it without the "smokey" blowing snow in the bottom half, at least not as much of it.

Thanks folks!

Regarding the blowing snow / 'mist' - I have some without any, I can take another look at them but I wasn't as excited about those. Thanks for your thoughts!

Lori - no 'glow' added on the small version, a little added to the large version (but it only really affects the rime).

I really like the contrast between the tree trunks and the branches. I could see this with a bit of a crop off the bottom.

Floris, I like this real well. Those blues in the background really convey the cold here! The details in the larger version really come out. For me, I can see a crop off the bottom emphasizing the detail in the lower middle up works too. :toast:

Beautiful winter scene Floris! I would like a little more space between the bushes and the aspen branches, but a wonderful rendition of what you had to work with.

Great title! Lovely shot, and the rime ice on the branches makes for a wonderful contrast to the boles. The windblown snow adds another very nice element.
