Hall of Faces

Last month, I hooked up with Marc Adamus and his pal Colin and we spent a week shooting all over northern Arizona and southern Utah. This was from the first day of shooting. It's a little known slot canyon near Page, Arizona.

The most remarkable thing about this particlular canyon was the floor. Since it's so rarely visited, the floor was undisturbed and had the most photogenic sand ripples and mud rolls. This was a real treat because it allowed for compositions including the floor, which gives a sense of place that you don't see all that often in shots of slot canyons.

I hope my reasoning for the image title is readily apparent. Can you see the faces?

I'd like to dedicate this image to Tony Kuyper, the Sandstone Master. His name was bandied about quite a bit by the three of us while we were there. Hope you like it, Tony.

5DM2, 24mm, f/16, ISO 100 A blend of several different exposures.

Outstanding canyon shot. The light is very well handled using the multiple exposures.

Kory, this is a really unique slot image I enjoy very much. Your thoughts about rarely getting to see a sense of depth and the place as a whole in slot photography really rings true with this image, which puts us right there!

The inclusion of the sun (?) gives this place a firm grounding that one doesn't usually see in these types of canyons. Very creative, and the 'development' is spot on.

Very cool, Kory! Definitely looks spooky, and yes I see the faces. The inclusion of the muddy corridor is wonderful. Gotta make it there one of these days!

Beautiful work here. The diffraction star really gives a sense of depth, and it's great to have the floor of the canyon intact.

Hi Kory!
Fantastic composition and fantastic execution.
Really wonderful title, color, everything.
I've seen a lot of slot canyon shots most of them I don't remember but this one I will.

Nicely done, I especially like the subtle light on the eroded canyon floor.

Very nice shot Kory. I definitely see the faces. Is that the sun at the back of the frame, or sunlight reflecting off a bright wall? Either way, it makes for a very unique slot canyon shot.

I do like it, Kory. The light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel effect is pretty cool for a slot canyon where you can rarely see light horizontally, just overhead.

Kory,

I can absolutely see the faces and they are really a great addition to the scene. Great use of the sun - it's presence is just right, not too overpowering. Great job with the blend and processing. No nits from me. What a wonderful slot image.

Hey all, thanks for the comments. I've been away from my PC for days now, so I was unable to respond to questions.

To Joe Rossbach: Nice meeting you, too.

To Scott Smorra: the diffraction star is from light bouncing off another wall
