Welcome.

Nice bird and setting. I'd prefer more DOF in the foreground and would have gone to ISO 400 and stopped down more for this shot.

They are cool little guys and I like the setting among the vegetation. I think this has sufficient DOF as presented but Richard makes a good point about going to ISO400 & f5.6 for a bit more depth. I like your choice of composition with the grebe looking across the frame and including the habitat.

A really nice first post, Ian. Welcome to NPN! The shallow DOF works for me as the subject is perfectly in focus. Nicely captured.

Really like the pose and setting Ian and your composition works very well given the head turn of the grebe. I too enjoy the selective focus but on the other hand I do think there's a bit too much OOF foreground so I'd have either used more of a pano crop or gone the route suggested by Richard.

Ian,

I like your great low angle, the head turn of the grebe, the setting and nice view of the eye. I think I'd crop a little more off of the bottom.

Welcome to NPN's avian critique gallery, you will learn much here from the thoughtful, honest critiques you are given.

Beautiful colors in this great exposure on the grebe. Nice detail in the larger image. I would crop in a bit more to eliminate some of the OOF foreground.
