The first time I found these spiders in Texas I was impressed by their size and number. They had formed a tunnel of webs and I had to cross it, fortunately they were not interested in me.

Actually, male and female, with the male doubling as an "after sex" snack. These are banana spiders (nephila clavipes). To add to the insult, the males have 3 penises, which all break off during mating. Bobbed and gobbled! BRRRR!

Nice capture and perfect for the challenge, Monica! Phillip's description brings a whole new meaning to the term "fatal attraction"! Come to think of it, maybe that would be a good title for this shot

In the beginning I chose the title "Father and son" from a song of Cat Stevens, after Phil's comment I think that the Gary's idea is perfect. Thanks everybody. :wavey:

Mauro, the only way they would grow back is in the afterlife (if spiders have an afterlife).

Good title change. We get a lot of these here in South Carolina and getting caught in a web is pretty scary. Good shot and nice one for the challenge!

Reminds me of the song by King Missile (Google is your friend...)
Anyhow, before this gets out of hand and we are shut down, all i can say is this is a real nice shot, great select focus and an interesting, albeit a bit creepy, subject!

A little too fatal for the male ...lol...but sure a great time before being gobbled up... lol The frame could have been a tad bit brighter...

My mind boggles at all of the juicy, double er triple entendres this post could propagate, but I'll just have to leave it at the female devouring her soulmate, one sure way your man doesn't stray ( Not that I'm trying to give the ladies any ideas now.) Monica it's a very nicely composed image, but I do wish that the spiders were just a tad brighter they look very colorful. Actually in the arachnid world the female devouring her mate isn't all that rare very common in spider species. Think Black widow, Tarantula's etc and on the other side the female Preying Mantis. Which starts the meal by decapitating the male and eating his head.

Ah isn't nature peaceful and wonderful.....

Thanks for sharing Monica.

So after reading the chain of comments, it seems the title "Fatal attraction" sure fits the bill. At first look I thought it to be Argiope aurantia (Writing Spider)..
But the feathery tufts on its legs are a dead giveaway..AKA Golden Silk Spider.
Perhaps some light fill would make it better? Like that BG :wavey:
