Canon 1D Mark 4 With EF 500mm f4
1/2000 sec, F7.1, ISO 500

I am somewhat happy with the results give the time of day this was taken. Real happy to get another change at shooting a fox.

Please give me the good the bad and the ugly in your critique.

Mike

Just beautiful.... love the catchlight. I hope one day I can join you on a "fox hunt"

Nice capture of a fox. I like the way the left rear leg is back in stride and the glance back. My only nit is the whole photo looks too dark or under exposed giving all the colors a drab look. I can tell by the fox squinting and the shadow that the sun was shining. Lighten this up and it will look much better IMO.

I am usually in the minority but I like images a bit darker. This is totally lovely. Great pose and I love how the vegetation comes up behind him. Wonderful details. I would love to have taken this image or even to have seen this.

Detail on the fox looks terrific. I wish he were not squinting quite so much, but nothing you could do about that. I think this would benefit from a little brightening. Also, the placement in the frame is quite centered. If possible (depending of if this is full frame,) you might try shifting his position in the frame so there is more space for him to look into.

Hi Mike,

Overall I quite like this as posted. I personally find the squinting eyes interesting, partly because they're a little "different" than "typical" eyes. I love the pose - that extended rear leg and head turn are excellent. If the image were mine I'd play with two things...first I'd increase the exposure a little (1/3 to 1/2 a stop), but on the fox ONLY (I'm thinking it will really pop out if you leave the rest of the image as is) and, second, I'd lower the fox in the frame by cropping off a strip off the bottom (pretty much all of the out-of-focus zone). This second modification would also help get the fox out of "dead-centre" (vertically). If this image is a crop, I'd add however much comes off the bottom on top. If this is full frame, I'd still crop the same amount off the bottom and not worry about the aspect ratio change.

So just a few minor tweaks...which is all a very solid image like this needs!

Cheers...

Brad

Lovely image of a fox, I especially like his colour and the catchlight in his eye. Only very minor nit would be the bg, the bokeh looks a little busy there. Good stuff :toast:
