Orphaned

I presume this falls under 'captive'. (?)

Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant Orphanage (situated in Nairobi National Park) takes care of elephant orphans who have lost their mother to human 'intervention' (poaching/shooting). The purpose is to release them back in the wild in Tsavo East National Park, once they are more or less independent.

This photo is taken at the orphanage where several youngsters were playing in the sand.

Love the tight crop! Nice detail in the skin and I like the red sand.

Excellent composition, I like the red tones and the expression of the baby elephant...

Hi Ingrid,

This is both quite creative and impactful. I like the warm colours (but some may argue that the elephant itself is perhaps slightly too orange). The detail in the critical eye region is very good. I think the image might have been a little stronger if there was a little more depth-of-field, i.e., if the trunk was a little sharper (so perhaps stopped down to f8 or even f11?).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Agreeing with Brad on the details, but I wanted to add that I find this to be an unusual and refreshing perspective.

Spectacular... the red dust, "crying" eye and pose really add to this shot and convey a sense of sadness (which can be attached to the orphan status of the animal).
