from my recent southwest USA roadtrip. Because the sun was setting behind me, I needed to wait until the sun completely set because of the long shadows. This was the colour pallet visible after sun set.

Jonathan,

I like the mystery of this. I do think it's a tad flat (just a tad), and the foreground is a little too dark. You might try punching the contrast and brightness in the 'land' portion, while leaving the sky as-is. The image also looks a little soft.

Compositionally, I'd like to see both mittens with a little more room on the righ and left side of the image. I do like the curves of the foreground sandstone and the soft light.

Jonathan,

Kudos first of all for trying to come up with something different of the mittens. I think the idea of including the foreground rock formations and trying to relate them to the background mittens was a good idea. But as Preston eluded to, this does come out rather flat. Yes, this is after sunset so the available light makes a difference here. But it also took away from being able to differentiate between the foreground rocks and the mittens.

I do really like the sky and the background colors. This may have been a case where eliminating any foreground might have been the way to go. But then, I wasn't there and so it's a bit unfair for me to make that judgment from this seat.

I agree withPreston and Lon..... I think lightening the fore ground eliments and then boosting the contrast may help.

Two rocks, two mittens. This mirroring is a nice compositional hook. Balancing the bright sky better with the darker non-sky areas could improve the image's overall viewability.

The right mitten seems to have a little of last light upon it. If the left had this also, they would stand out more. I agree the contrast comments.
