Intimate Zion

On the third or fourth morning of the tour, we shoot sunrise and early morning light several locations on Checkerboard Mesa. The color was all but gone up there, but the fantastic sandstone and towering sandstone mountains make it a great location anytime of the year. On the way back down into Zion Canyon, we stopped at Pine Creek to shoot the amazing fall color. I spotted a group of Maples that were a little past peak and was drawn in to the group in hopes of shooting the fallen leaves on the canyon floor. Upon entering the grove, I was immediately drawn to a group of Yucca’s and the fallen leaves on the floor. The graphic shapes and vivid color was all to tantalizing to pass up.

Joseph - This one is a beauty! I especially like th brach above leading the eye into the image. Great detail throughout. I had driven past those canyons near the road on my way to Brye during my 1st trip there, and thought there must be some great shots in there. Now I see what I missed! Makes me want to return.

I forgot to mention, the shadow on the tree trunk mid frame and some of the distant branches look a bit too blue on my monitor (work) so I'm wondering if that was your intension.

Wow ... now that's a strong composition ... absolutely stunning. The blues on the trunks is way too much for me though. One might see this shot strictly abstract and then it might be OK, but I like to see this as a nature shot and then it's over the top.

Beautiful scene and nicely framed. The bright blue-purple band running across the image looks strange to me. The other colors look right on the the blues look unnatural. If you were to desaturate the blue/purple I think this would be outstanding.

Thanks for the suggestions on the blues everyone. I will have a second look at that and pull back on the saturation to give it a more natural appearance. :wavey:

Pulled back on the blue and cyan channel in hue/sat, better?

Still a little unnatural, but definitely much better. I might go even further.

Nice comp and color, the blues are just a tad to saturated for me, second post is much better IMO.

This is a very interesting (and nice) image, Joe. I like the point of view here a lot. Great colors overall, but the blue is a little to much for my taste. I think the repost looks much better, just my feeling. It is a wonderful image anyway you look at it. Nice work, Joseph.

Great starburst effect of the yucca! I'm glad you found a cooperative one (the ones I see that are good are too big normally!) :toast:

I like how the whole image seems to emanate from the center of that grass. Beautiful color and composition. This is really pleasing to look at. I like the repost better, it feels more natural.

Very powerful composition. The blues do seem a little overdone but not having been there it may be quite natural. Since I started observing nature thru a photographers eye I've seen things I would have considered completely unnatural prior to. :toast:

Great palette and composition, Joe. So far my favorite of your recent images. The second version gets my vote, though the greens still look a bit oversaturated.

This is beautiful! The foreground is wonderful in shapes and colors. The upper/background does get a little busy and chaotic.
