Desert Firetails

The Desert Firetail (Telebasis salva) is a tiny, exquisite gem. It's small (1 inch) and so retiring that it is easily overlooked, despite the bright scarlet color of the male. A New World species, with a range extending south of Venezuela. They like dense marshy habitat and when flying low over mats of bright green vegetation, the red males are a striking sight..
F/16, 1/300th, ISO 800, Canon 1D M3, Sigma 150mm with fill.

Beautiful colors, and amazing detail. I shoot similar damselflies in my area, but never achieve this clarity. The only nit I have is that blade of grass shooting out from the right side of the image. Still an excellent image!

Howard,
excellent to get both perfectly in focus. The eyes seems to me two gemstones. The colors and the "acrobatic" pose are great. Well done. :toast: :wavey:

This is a very fine capture, Howard. Realizing that these insects are only about one inch in length and, if they are anything like similar ones around here, they are pretty alert, it's quite an accomplishment to obtain this close-up view. I'm fine with it as posted. I found your caption interesting too. :toast: :toast:

I needed to look at the larger version to really appreciate this image. Nice detail and dof. The background might be a hair bright, but that is a small nit.

For Krunal,

The original 2:3 ratio didn't work for me no matter how I sliced it, so I used the 1:2 ratio to cmpose here.
I restrict my comps to available print sizes..

So hard to get a mating pair like this in focus... you handled it masterfully. Would like a little more OOF in the BG though
