Counter Balance

This is probably my favorite shot from my trip to Lake Louise this past summer.(I meant to post this one a while ago)I was in the parking lot long before there was any light to speak of and as the light began to appear I took several shots from many locations. This particular shot was taken a few mins before the sun finally crested the peaks to my left and I was really looking for something a little different. What I really like about this image is how the slight arc in the rocks in the foreground nicely counter the mountains in the distance. A little added bonus was some diffused sunlight coming thru the trees to my left and how they brought in some nice light on a few of the rocks at my feet. You will likely notice the slight haze in the background caused by the forest fires going on in BC at the time. I did clean up some of the haze but felt it was natural to the time the shot was taken that I shouldn't remove it completely.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by to take a look.

As always your thoughts and comments are welcome and appreciated.

I like the comp Mark. The background mountain and sky is a little too bright - I'd like to see that burned in more. And maybe bring out a bit more detail in the shadows on the left slope.

Totally awesome composition, but the mountains in the bg are way too bright in my opinion, whites look almost blown off. I'd love to see more details up there because the mountains really look beautiful. I think you did the right choice in not using a grad filter here - the side slopes would have become too dark - but if you shot RAW, I'm quite sure you have plenty of dynamic range to recover the highlights.

I'll never get tired of looking at the color of that water! As others have mentioned, the mountain is too bright.

I like the balance between the FG rocks and the peaks in the back, but I agree with the others in thinking that the sky and peaks are too bright .

Famous view - but nicely rendered! I like how the fg is lit. That dappled warm light is really appealing.

Thanks very much for the comments all. I've been working a little bit with the dodge/burn tool to bring down the light in the background...I'll need a little more face time on it to make the change look natural. I'm still learning the ins and outs of photoshop but its slowly coming  Thanks agian.

I really like the textures and dappled light in the foreground. The rocks and water look about right. The background brightness and contrast could maybe be adjusted to better match that of the lower half of the frame.

I agree with everything said so far. Beautiful glacial blue water, and very nice comp. Just get those highlites brought down a little!
