A mouthful

I believe this is an eastern fox squirrel but I'm not 100% positive. I usually like to shoot larger wildlife of the type found in Yellowstone or other national parks but they are noticably absent where I live in Dallas, Texas, so lately I have become very serious about photographing birds of which there are plenty around here in some of the more wildernessy urban parks. About the only mammals I see when I'm out shooting birds are squirrels and rabbits which I mostly ignore but I thought the pose, the mouthful of acorn and especially the nice rim lighting made this shot well worthwhile. This little guy was nice enough to pose for about a half a dozen shots before he went about his business. The OOF circles of the specular highlights in the BG don't really bother me too much but I would prefer the BG to be all evenly dark. I don't know what the little white spots under the squirrel are but I think they maybe water droplets. If you look at a blown up version of the shot it looks like a few water drops are clinging to his fur or maybe he is relieving him/herself! I am pretty happy with the shot.

Great image. You handled the lighting very well. The comp. and the focus are spot on.

I like colors and the circular highlights in the BG. It gives it a nice late day feel.

I like the way you captured the rim lighting and background highlights. The tree trunk makes for an interesting diagonal in your image. What squirrel photo would be complete without a nut I ask? :toast: :toast:

Hi Robert,

Good job on the exposure in this tricky light - you got both the rim lighting and the shaded regions just about spot-on. While I like the diagonal flow of this image, I'm wondering if cropping off the most out-of-focus region at the bottom of the image (and thus lowering the squirrel in the frame) might strengthen this image more? Just a thought.

Cheers..thanks for sharing this...

This is superbly exposed and processed Robert! Did you use fill flash here? The spot sin the BG don't bother me one bit, but (like yourself) I also would not miss them if they were not there. :toast:

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Vincent. I didn't use any fill flash or a reflector on the shot. The light is all natural.

Neat capture. My only wish would be for a slightly different pose with tail visible!

Terrific shot, Robert. In particular I think it's quite an accomplishment to obtain such nice detail with this type of lighting and no fill flash. :toast:
