After finishing a fine meal of dead wildebeest, this lioness' face was covered with flies, feeding on the blood and left-overs...

Masai Mara, Kenya.

Nikon D300, Nikkor AF-S VR 300mm f/2.8
ISO 400
f/8.0
1/320
This photo is NOT CROPPED.

SORRY...I UPLOADED THE WRONG FILE FOR THE LARGE FORMAT...WILL TRY AGAIN LATER!!!

Great detail, even in this small image. Well seen, and I like the way the profile fills the frame, although some may not.

Hi Ingrid,

Well...given the subject matter and detail, I wouldn't call this a wall-hanger, it certainly is interesting and an excellent "documentary" shot. From a purely compositional perspective it does feel a little too tightly cropped, but cropping it so tightly DOES help show off the detail of both the lion and the flies. Pity that the wrong file was uploaded for the larger version - it would be really interesting to see it. On my monitor this version looks perhaps just a tad over-sharpened, which is both really easy to do with such fine lines in an image (i.e., the fur) and easy to correct (if you choose to do so).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Not a image you see too often. Great detail!

She has a cute beard
At this size, it does look a little tight. Am pretty confident that the fly and eye detail in a larger version would make this very interesting.

Hi all, thanks for the comments!
Sorry the composition is a bit tight for some of you but she was very close (or rather...WE were...:-)) so this photo is totally not cropped - I just wanted as much detail as I could possibly get, so I'm quite pleased with it myself, though I know the subject in itself may not be appealing to some
As far as the sharpening is concerned, I trust that when I upload the larger version (tomorrow!), it will be better....
Thanks again for commenting!!!!

Interesting, although personally the subject doesn't appeal to me, you've done a good job capturing the details. I don't find it oversharp on my monitor, but I think a slight curve adjustment (darker) would help with the tonal range. By the way, congrats on your category win in the Windland, Smith, Rice competition.
