Adirondack Tapestry

Just got back from Acadia National Park and have lots of editing to do and will no doubt be posting some of those shots soon. This however is from a quick trip over to the Adirondacks before going to Maine. The light was pretty strong for any wide angle or forest scenes however I really liked the the backlight and strong contrast it created while shooting up into the hillsides of Cascade Pass. Who said you can't shoot in the middle of the day

Thanks for looking!

Kurt - I would totally agree. Some of my best fall images this year were taken around mid-day for that nice backlit or slightly side lit effect. Even past peak foliage really pops with the sun behind. Nice detail even in the shaded areas. If you haven't tried it, you might find you get a crisper yellow in the leaves by using Image - Adjust- Selective Colors, then going with a -2 on the cyan under the Yellow Color. This is in PS CS4. You may get a truer yellow under blue skies.

Very balanced as well, the yellow trees and the still green.

Thanks for the tip Harry! I think the yellow leaves may look a little cool here primarily because they were a little pre-peak, still some green kicking around. The sky was mostly filled with big puffy clouds and the sun was in and out.

Very pretty Kurt, especially for midday light. The contrast works wonderfully.

Very nice I do like the color in this, it doesn't need to pop out always. :toast: :toast:

At first I wasn't sure if I liked the very dark areas in the photo, but after looking at it for awhile, I like that the dark areas create highlighted areas that break up the scene (instead of homogenous colors across the image). It makes for a more interesting image IMO. Nicely seen!

The side/back direction of the light allows the harder light on the trees to be the perfect quality. This stands in contrast to the fall color images that focus on the color of the leaves. Even though I can picture this composition and lighting being very effective with more uniform summer foliage, the variation in leaf color adds an intricate second layer to the message in the image.

Beautiful light on these trees, Kurt, and I really like the color palette. Your choice of isolating these trees with mid-day light worked exquisitely well. Superb.

This would look great big. Lots of details, it appears and strong light to make everything stand out. It feels sort of abstract with the strong contrast.

I think this is stunning, Kurt. The light/dark contrast works so well here and there is a subtle feel to the colors and leaves that is really resonating with me. I just love this image. :toast:

Kurt,

Excellent! I really like the angle of light, catching only parts of the trees and creating some very pleasing contrast. Nice job isolating these trees on the hillside.

What a beautiful light painting, Kurt. The darker areas are what make the shot to me. Fantastic eye to pick this out. :toast: :toast:

Simply fantasic, Kurt. :toast: I really love the interplay of shadow and light in this beauty. How did the rest of your Maine trip go? It looked like the colors would only get better as the week progressed.
