The Trident

I photographed this tree in an old growth coastal forest in the late morning. There was just enough fog to highlight the sunbeams filtering through the forest. While I like this image, I feel it could be stronger, but have looked at it too long to figure out! I need your input!
Please view large.
Thanks for looking!

Love the mood that light beams create. Anne, I think that you have captured the scene well. It would be nice to see a little more detail in the ferns growing on the tree, perhaps even lightening the whole foreground tree.

Aside from trying to get a little more visible detail in the big tree, and it's ferns, I think this is fine. Really moody, and dramatic!

I'm a sucker for light beams mainly because I have such a hard time being at the right place at the right time to shoot them. Looks like you had some good things to work with here. I'd be curious what the color version looks like. Perhaps the foliage would stand out better in a color version. Outside of that lightening a few areas on the tree may help.

Anne,

Without being there or seeing the original capture, it's hard to say what you could have done or could do to make this stronger. I think it's a very strong image to start with with the great capture of the sun's rays streaming through the scene. You've got a uniquely formed tree that I think you've included nicely in the frame. Yes, there could be more detail here and there, BUT this image is more about the light, the shape of the tree and the rays. Adding fern detail, while perhaps a bonus, I don't think is necessary here.

I like your composition because you've allowed room on the right for the extension of the rays.

I'd be curious to know what the color version is like, but honestly, this works well for me.

Very cool shot Anne - the beams look great. I do think more detail in the tree would help - maybe a slightly less contrasty B&W conversion. I feel like the composition is a little off for some reason too - maybe a slight crop off of the left side? I'm not sure though.

Wow what a tree! Great image imo. The perspective, that tree and the light all work well. The squarish crop is also appealing.

Lovely shot Anne, and a perfect image for B&W. Your composition is very nice, although I wish you could have included the entire left branch.

I really enjoy the layers of light and tones captured here. To make the fg tree standout a little more from the bg I might prefer a little dodging to the foliage growing along the trunk and its base. Other than that this more than works for me... nice work!

Always difficult to pull out a good forest shot. Came out really nice. I like it.

I really like the conversion and the beams of light. Nice range of tones and it all makes for a strong mood inducer.

I love the dark feeling this image gives me looking at it, IMO I would not change anything. It leaves you wondering what lurks in the deep shadows?

Really a grand forest/tree scene. Love the perspective here, makes this fg tree seem massive, and the light is very nice.
