Fern Forest (w/ new crop)

Gunnison National Forest, Colorado

Before my crash I had a wonderful trip, hitting Utah, Montana and Wyoming before I got to Colorado. This is one from a place I have shot at many times before, but for some reason I never enjoyed the streak of light in the back until this trip.

Canon 5Dmk2, Zeiss 28-85

Beautiful tree trunks and the light streak works really well. I am a bit on the fence about the big foreground fern. It works either way. Very nicely done.

Great trunk twists. I don't mind the forefront fern. I might bring the whites up a touch. :toast:

Ferns look a little past their time, but a great comp and some nice light in the bg, although i find the front fern mildly distracting. Overall--very nice!

Hey Jimmy, great to see you back alive and with new work!

This is really nice with the line of light in the background. And there is a great sense of depth as well. I like the contrast between the cool shadows and the warm light, but I think the WB could still be turned a little warmer.

Here's one cropped a bit from the bottom, a little warmer wb and a little whiter whites. I also included a little more real estate on the left side of the image that was omitted on original crop.

I can certainly attest to the difficulty of these shots and your affinity towards them Jimmy. You've got the best collection of aspen shots on the web - hands down. I spent at least an hour studying them after my trip to Colorado. That being said - I don't think this is one of your best; although I still like it real well. (I like the two you presented in Rocky Mtn Forums both better) I like the crop down off the top, but I like the foreground as presented in the original with that nice fern on the right hand side and also the crop in on the left to eliminate the greenery in the corner. I hope this helps. :wavey:

A lot of nice things going on here with the really twisted aspens, ferns, those green leaves in the foreground and that streak of light. The upper left is a little distracting for me with that big bright area. Glad you made it out of the accident ok. I was amazed by the relatively little damage to your 4runner given the height and apparently severe slope of that drop off.

That backlight makes this one fairly magical. :toast:

The backlighting and screwy trunks make this one a keeper. :toast: Nice job.

Those twisted trees and the light in the background are incredible. I do like your second post a bit better; the somewhat pano format works nicely with the trees and the light, emphasizing those elements. Very nicely done.

That streak is actually pretty cool and adds a nice touch. Superb Jimmy!

I'm conflicted about the crop, because I like the green leaves around that foreground aspen on the left.

The crooked trunks really add interest for me.

Is this how you felt right after your crash? walking towards the light? I looked at your video, you're a very lucky man Jimmy, to be alive I mean. Sorry about your truck though.

I think I remember a square comp of this scene from last year. Looks nice, Jimmy. The light in the bg gives the image a nice relaxed mood.

Great scene Jimmy! I like the original comp best, but like the 2nd version WB and whites. Love the twisted trunks too. Have you picked up a new 4Runner yet?

Jimmy,

I think this is glorious! The light coming through the background really makes this one unique. I wouldn't mind seeing the entire full frame because I really like the extra space on the left; it allows the light source to be more complete, if that makes sense. But I really do like the second, cropped version.

I'm so glad you were able to have a successful trip before it got so rudely interrupted!

That light is fascinating, Jimmy. I love the contrast of the blue aspens, the brown ferns, and the spots of green throughout. The crop is an improvement IMO. Very nicely done!

What a crazy cool collection of aspen trunks. At first I was a little ambivalent about the fern in the LRC, but the more I study this the more I think it makes for a nice counterbalance to the brighter area in the ULC. My vote is for the original post. Well seen and captured.

Those few curly trunks scattered about really contrrast well with the straight ones. A very nice scene, and capture!
