Fishing the Narrows

This is the North side of the Valdez Narrows where the Valdez Bay opens into Prince William Sound. The small island is called Middle Island. It's not quite in the middle of the narrows but close enough to get the name. The boaters were there for the silver salmon and were probably hoping to win the Valdez Silver Salmon Derby. This image is extremely heavy on one side but it still seems to work for me, probably because of the strong diagonal line that breaks it into two triangles. It will be interesting to hear what others think.

Sony DSC-R1, ISO-160, f8.0, 1/160

I like it Gary. The larger version really shows the power of the mountain and the boats give it the needed scale. Then my eyes wondered through the cloud coming off the mountain and went back to through the little island to the boats. Had a nice time wondering through here.

I'm with you, Stan. Red Salmon is my favorite, by far and Silver Salmon is number two. This was shot from a friends boat. We were combining photography and fishing. Get some nice photos, pack the freezer and win the derby all in one day! Well, 2 out of 3 isn't too bad

Gary, this works very well for me, the expanse of sky on the left side of the frame balances the mountain on the right, both are anchored by the water at the bottom. The boats adds a sense of scale. Gorgeous greens on the side of the mountain. The clouds are great.

Sunlight? Blue sky? In Valdez? Nah. Very cool shot, Gary.

But to those of us with true understanding, there's not salmon like King Salmon Or, in Ray Troll's phrase, "Ain't no nookie like Chinookie."

For those who haven't visited Ray's store, let me urge you to give it a try...
