GREAT BLUE HERON

"Nothing special about the composition". I just wanted to show a perfect GBH in wonderful very early morning light hunting amongst cypress trees. This had to be one on the best looking GBHs I've ever photographed. Not a feather out of place.
The image was made at 7:17am. Out of curiosity I checked sunrise for that day and it was 7:17am. The light was very low because of clouds.

From truck window with bean bag. Processed in Nikon Capture NX and Photoshop CS.

COMMENT ON CRITIQUES ALREADY REC'D: I have images of this bird with just the 500mm and some with the 1.4x TC. I knew it was tight in the frame with the 1.7x TC but it was my attempt to show the beautiful plumage up-close, at full frame and that's why I first stated, "NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THE COMPOSITION".

He is a beauty and sharply imaged. I could do with a little extra room on top and bottom-but just a tad.

A nice look at the plumage - to my eye it needs a slight CW rotation Ronnie.

What appeals to be is the range of textures in this shot. The silky neck plumage. The long, coarse neck and primary covert plumes. The coarse bark on the trees. The smooth water. Fine work.

A pleasure to view - there's so much of interest in this image. I agree with Jim's comment about the textures.

Gorgeous bird Ronnie. One of the reasons I love your work is that you also feature the terrain somewhat, and that makes your work much better IMO than just a bird on a stick.

Ronnie,

The heron is a gorgeous specimen as you mentioned. Beautiful colors, plumage looks perfect. Great texture and details not only in the bird but the surrounding habitat too.

I usually skip over GBH pictures because I just got tired of looking at so many dull shots of them but this is the BEST heron shot I have ever seen. The plumage is amazing. Excellent shot and fine detail, the larger image looks great.
