RMNP Bull in the Trees

Taken a couple weeks ago in Rocky Mountain National park Colorado. This bull was photographed in the trees about 1/2 mile north and calling back to, the Bull Kurt has posted pictures of (in the meadow). Quite a day seeing these two call and respond to each other. I only spent 1-full day in the park but I am definitely planning a trip back next year.

And, Kurt's bull is just behind yours in the thumbnails!

I'm liking the subdued colors. Detail, pose, and head turn are nice as is the view of the eye. Would like a little more space in front and less behind if you got it. If not, a bit off the right side gets him less centered and helps minimize the out of focus branch on the lower right.

Handsome fellow ! and you caught him at the right moment. A little more space up front and on top would be nice.

Hey Robbie...Glad to see you finally posted your image! I think you did a gret job of seperation from the trees and I don't find them distracting at all. Too bad the light wasn't making it through yet, but you still captured good details without much of it. I do echo Steve's suggestion on the comp. Nice work!

Funny to see two calling Elk bulls in the gallery in sequence only to realise they were actually calling to each other! You captured a great pose Robbie and chose the right aperture to set him off aginst that BG. Compositionally I think a bit more room in front of him (left side of the frame) would have strengthened it. I might consider darkening the few bright spot in the BG trees.

I agree about moving the bull out of center but also echo that you have captured wonderful details in that subtle light and a telling pose. Good job.

I agree with the suggestion to point the camera slightly more to our left. I like the eye contact and that moving pose.

Thanks everyone for the input. I have made the changes suggested and like the outcome and have really learned a lot with posting this image.

Great light and sharpness on this guy. Catch light in the eye makes it. The colors look fine, except for the grass. Did you try to bring some color to it or was it too blown out? I suspect you had to let the grass be to get the best exposure on the bull.
