Class picture

American White Pelicans
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos
This image cracks me up as it reminds me of how in elementary school we would all have to line up for the class picture. Shortest in the front, tallest in the back. I'd always be antsy, wanting to get back to whatever I had been doing while waiting for the inevitable "Say Cheese". Those school photographers must have had it rough trying to get everyone to look towards the camera at once.
Well here I was able to get eye contact from each of these 18 white pelicans, even the shy one hiding behind another bird on the right side of the frame.
These pelicans were feeding as a group, most of the time part of them would have their heads in the water while the others were looking up.
D200, lens resting on vehicle window, f7.1, 1/1500, ISO 400, EV -0.3, 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 200mm, nearly full frame side to side, cropped to pano format, natural light. Aperture priority, auto WB, taken 09-11-2010 in Utah. Larger image posted.
Class dismissed!
As always, I sincerely appreciate your comments & critiques. Thank you for looking.

40 commentsthe 18 eye contact make this image special. Very cool composition.
Steve, nothing was done to get the pelicans to look at us, no baiting, this is one of several photos where I have all the birds looking at the camera. I don't remember if a vehicle had passed behind us and that got the pelicans attention. I also have shots where all the birds bottoms are in the air with their heads under water from this shoot. It is fun to watch them feed in a group.
Excellent!
Getting them all in a decent pose and looking at you is an amazing accomplishment.
Really like the water color, ripples, and comp.

What a great catch. Looks like a serious meeting of the minds. Great comp on this and the whites are perfect. Was this a cloudy day? I noticed only -1/3 on exposure. Very interesting image Mia. Classic.

I am very curious about how long you waited until they all "cooperated" with the pose. It's so tricky, wait and they fly away, or don't wait and don't get what you really want. You know the dilemma...
Anyway, congrats on the EP.
Catherine, I looked at my files from the day I took this image, I had about 11 minutes with the Pelicans, this image was taken about 8 minutes after they started heading towards us. It was only 2 minutes later until I wasn't able to fit them all into the frame even pulling my zoom back to 200mm. After that I tried to zoom in and just focus on one or a few birds.
The reason Ron D didn't get a shot like this was because he had his 500mm and a 1.4x TC and he could not get them all into a frame.
