Puffin in flight

Taken on Skomer Island in West Wales earlier this year.
Panning at 1/250th second may sound easy but not for Puffins it isn't, they fly like bullets.

I quite like the wing blur in this one.

Sony A350
Sigma 50-500 EX
1/250th second
f7.1
ISO 400
330mm
+0.3 stop exposure compensation
Centre-weighted metering
Hand held panning

I like the wing blur too Geoffrey. I also like the natural colors, the muted background and the spread of the tail. Nice work getting this at 1/250th.

Easy? I never even attempt a pan at less than 1/800, preferably at 1/1250. I tried 1/250, but it filled up my trash can too fast.

The richness of colour here and the area of focus really make this a nice image. Wing blur is very good. Technically very difficult to do this at 250th or higher.. Takes a lot of practice!!!

Not very often does the wing blur make the shot Geoff. That's the case for me on this one - that combined with the sharpness of the head.

Very nice. A different look from most Puffin images.

Great wing blue, wish it was facing the camera.

Works for me. Nice sharpness on the head for such a slow SS.
