Lot's of folks going "dark" these days. So I think I'll go the other way and celebtrate light. It is, after all, what makes it all happen. Getting a little creative with flare. From Mt. Rainier. Learn the story behind this image on my photoblog.

Nice, Ian. Very creative. One of my own favorite shots used this flare technique. The lone tree is what pulls it all together here. Marvelous.

Love the way the tree seems to reach out to the rays

That's quite the flare! In fact, I'll be posting a shot later in the week from Zion that has the same type of effect. They are hard to capture and keep surrounding details. I think you did a nice job. I bet this image sings when viewed in a larger capacity. Cheers.

Fantastic idea and execution Ian. Definitely a unique wildflower image and that tree does a great job of leading into the sunlight at the top. Nicely done!

Nice job Ian. Its bold to shoot in to the sun and I think it creates some nice effects. There probably is more creative avenues into the light than during dark, just my opinion. It is however very challenging but can be tamed with digital blending.

Well done here Ian

Very creative! Maybe more yellow than red in the flare would look better? In any event, wonderful shot.

Looking at the thumbnail I was expecting to see the trunk of a large tree. Nice use of the light and a cool shot.

This is quite special. A very creative use of flare in the composition. The rest of the scene is really interesting too and I love the quality of the higlights throughout the frame.

Don't usually like flare in an image but this works so well with that single tree and the backlit meadow. Remarkable work as always.

now that's what I call "breaking the mold" - great idea and execution. I am only wondering whether a vertical comp would even be better or not

Hi Ian,
This is fantastic one of the best wildflower shots I've seen that mini-pine and the cosmic rays above make this photo unique and really really beautiful.

Ian,

I make choices for a photo excursion based on the best chance of extreme weather. I agree wholeheartedly that the weather drives the engine that creates dramatic stunning images. However you worked this into a remarkable image by continually moving uphill resetting the sun as you ascended until voila, magic. A lens effect, and I've never seen a flare so orange on my lens, was it coated? Makes no never mind at all this is one of your better images probably more satisfying for all the work you had to do to make it match your vision.

That's quite a pleasing result from a very peculiar technique. The backlighting and small tree are already very nice in their own right.

I'm going to comment it twice as it is one of the most unique and beautiful combinations of composition and execution I've seen in a good while.

Just incredible.

My eye wants to see the right side fully lit, but other than that this is one of the more creative interpretations to come out of Rainier yet. Awesome handling of the flare.

It would just be a pretty scene without the flare, but your creative effort puts this in another realm. Now that is llama light, even if it was just in your mind!
