D300 200-400mm w/ 1.7TC @ 650mm F6.7 1/320 Tripod ISO 640

Found a small wetland that had a pair of wood ducks yesterday and went back this AM to try to get more shots. Ended up with kingfisher and green heron as well as wood ducks.

I really liked the pose and dramatic lighting on this one.

I really like that long leg extending ddown the branch. Great pose, and the lighting is capped with a bright yellow eye.

Hi Bob,
From an overall perspective with regards to the directional light, perch and pose of the heron it looks great. However I do see several areas of concern. There is a washed out area of the perch near the lower foot. My biggest concern is the total lack of any fine detail in the larger image other than the eye. Either this is a very large crop or excessive noise reduction was applied.

I really like the pose and the perch. Side-lighting is very nice. The image seems quite soft however.

I agree completely with Ronnie G's commens on this image. A really nice setup for light and pose, but too much post processing it seems.

I"ll echo Ronnie and Ron here. I like this dramatic light a lot, plus the active posture that gives the image a lot of tension. But something's definitely hurt the detail and lowered the image quality as a result.

Totally agree, there is no detail in the plumage. Why would that be? the pose and mood are great!

Bob,
Sorry to be late to the party but I thought I would chime in. I realy like the perch and position of the green heron. The background is beautiful and isolates te subject nicely. However, when viewing the larger image there is not much fine detail as has been stated in previous posts. It also looks like the lighting was rather harsh as the section of perch near the foot is almost blown out. Having said that it's the dramatic side lighting that actually makes this image for me. It's a great pose of a great bird! One quick note on the comp...I would crop a little from the right side and I would add some to left side so the subject is not perfectly centered.

Great pose. Love the dark background, it shows off the bird beautifully.
