I indulged myself with a jaunt to the Mercer Arboretum today to look for some sunny shots. I got some really good water lily shots (stay tuned) but probably had the most fun shooting this ornamental banana flower. The light was filtering through the canopy and the leaves were moving just enough that the light striking the flower was different on every shot. The BG is the deep shade behind the bloom. I spot metered the flower when it was in shade and then just watched the show and fired away. All comments welcome.>=))>

The sharpness, detail and simplicity...just wonderful. Particularly like the detail on the stalk for some reason, fascinates me.

You started with a uniquely shaped flower and striking colors. The application of light and pov adds much to show its qualities. Really, nicely done!! The black b/g works quite well. One of the best parts is the strong light on the tall portion and the fade-to-black on the right side. Cool!

Outstanding Bill. The light is perfect and I like the way it fades to shadow, The segmentation of the stem is very cool. No nits, beautifully done.

I too find the detail on the stalk to be the most fascinating object in this image. Great detail, Bill, as always. It would have been nice to capture the lower petal/bract with a bit more light.

The Arboretum must have been a fun trip.

Cheers,

Carol

I like the shape and color of this flower, as well as the light that is falling on it. The stem(?) adds an additional point of interest. :toast:

Bill:
Before reading your comment, I thought that this is a studio shot and wish for a bit more light on the right petal. But after reading how this image was made, the difference in illumination sure makes it more interesting. The well illuminated stem certainly seems to steal the show. Well done. :toast:
