Red Dragonfly

I looked around for the exact i.d. of this dragonfly but couldn't find it. It was hanging out on this perch and would fly up in the air for a few seconds and come back down. I got one photo of it with a moth in it's mouth but I like this one better because it looks like he is looking at the camera and posing.

Shot with a tripod mounted Canon 7D, 300mm f/4L with 1.4x @ ISO 500, f/7.1 1/200 sec.

David:
Nice pose on this DF and good separation from the bg. The light looks a bit harsh but there is not much you can do with this as DF tends to like the hot sunny condiiton.

Great image, David! I like the red standing out against the green BG. I would like to see the one with the moth as well! :toast:

David, this is a Sympetrum (Meadowhawk). After that, things get a little difficult. It is probably the Cherry-faced Meadowhawk (Sympetrum internum), but these little guys are pretty hard to tell apart. There is another abundant red meadowhawk--Autumn Meadowhawk (Sympetrum vicinum) that looks much like it.

That said, nice photo--love how you got the lad (it is a male) isolated up against the complementary green background.
