I am a new member to NPN. My wife and I retired the first of the year and I want to become more serious about my photography. Since the first of the year we have been traveling, going from Key West, FL to Fairbanks, AK. This female Grizzly and her two cubs were staring down at us as we drove the Alaska Hwy in British Columbia north of Watson Lake, BC.

Canon 30D
Tokina 80-400
Shutter 1/500
Aperture F8
ISO 400
Focal Length 400mm

This is probably as dramatic of a roadside encounter as one could want! Terrific. I think it is unfortunate that they were backed by the bright sky coming through the leaves, creating a busy effect, but I also think you did a commendable job of balancing the exposure to not blow the sky to pure nothing and still keep detail in the bears and foreground. Good job. Ideally, in my opinion, the bears could be in the higher part of the frame, emphasizing the "looking down on us" perspective. And it is hard to tell from just a small posting if you have reflection or catchlight in the eyes, but if so I would try to enhance that a bit in post processing.

Welcome to NPN! We look forward to seeing more of your captures. Remember the value of these forums is feedback and so we also look forward to your sharing your perceptions about the work of others! NPN guidelines suggest trying for five comments for each post...That is easily met if you just offer some reaction to the nearest five in the gallery whenever you post! Again, welcome.

Hi Richard and welcome to NPN :wavey: Sounds like quite a road trip you have made! I like the looking down poses of the bears here. Without a doubt the shooting conditions were not in your favor here at all and it seems it was pretty impossible to capture the entire tonal scene in the image and sacrificing the sky as opposed to the bears was the right one to make. I am looking forward to more of your work and comments Richard. :toast:

Wow what a great shot...but I hope you had a looong lens, I don't think I'd be brave enough to get that close to a mama bear with cubs in tow. It is truly a wonderful shot though!
