The Broken Eggs in the Bisti Badlands near sunset. I wanted to include the color in the sky on the right, and have the crack leading to that area. In retrospect it feels crowded on the left, and if I had it to do over I would try angling the comp to the left more.

I found a surefire cure for a lack of depression. First, drive by an awesome photography location for 30 years without knowing it's there. Second, when you do finally discover it and visit, accidentally set your camera to a low quality setting for many of the photos.

That's the trick I pulled. About a year ago, after seeing some images here on NPN, I finally looked up where the Bisti Badlands are. My in-laws live in Aztec, New Mexico, about 60 miles from Bisti.

My father-in-law and I did an overnight backpack trip there last week, and I had the camera set on Basic JPG for all of my afternoon/evening shots (long story as to why). Fortunately I bracketed a lot, and the D80 seemed to do a reasonable job even at the basic setting so the photos are usable.

Since stumbling into that amazing Arizona flower patch in April I've had a long drought of getting out to photograph, so I had a lot of fun playing in the Broken Eggs and the hoodoos. Now that I know Bisti a little, I need to return for a better planned attack in the future.

Dang..John.....Basic JPEG!!! This is a beautiful shot. Those eggs make a great foreground element, and the color in the sky is very nice. I'd call you a big noobsauce if I hadn't done that before myself.

Very nice image. Lucky you to get to return to this place. However, it may be awhile before you get a sky like this again. I love the way the colors in the sky match the foreground. My only suggestion would be to consider cropping a little off the top to make the orange in the sky a little more significant.

Boy that turned out nice! Thats gotta fell pretty good. The sky is great. Love the color and texture. I also like how the foreground is repeated in the sky. Good to see some more of your work John.

Hard to judge "quality" at this level, but the light that you captured with a very dynamic comp is very interesting

Pretty sweet John, love the way the FG rock leads the eye through the scene to the dramatic sky. Beautiful work.

Sorry to hear about the low resolution capture of this awesome image John. I do think the loss of resolution is slightly visible in the fg of this image. Otherwise, it is very cool - ohe of the best skies and presentations of Bisti I have seen yet....

Lovely shot, I'd agree about your feeling with the composition angle but its wonderful nonetheless.

Excellent composition John, and what a great sky. Sorry for the camera setting screw-up, but we've all had those before. :frown: Beautiful shot.

Facinating looking landscape John, I think the comp works very well as it is. Great job on the manual blending.

John,

Excellent image from the Bisti Badlands and a great job with the near/far composition. I think this is nicely balanced and your composition showcases these fascinating formations well. The sunset and sky, just a beautiful compliment to the scene.

My only suggestion would be a slight increase in contrast for the landscape - just a smidge maybe. Otherwise, beautifully captured.

This is super, perhaps the best combination of composition and lighting I've seen at this location. Wouldn't change a thing. Well except shoot in RAW next time.

I like this very much John! Colours are nice an subtle, the image is full of mystery, detail, structure and dynamism. I like how the foreground remains in a certain shade...very nice indeed.

Beautiful light, colors and composition. I always like photos from that place and yours is no exception. Great shot, John, and I love your presentation too.

You nailed everything here except the format of the capture. At least you can console yourself with the prospect of a future trip. This is one of the better shots I've seen from this location . . . the foreground is strong but doesn't overwhelm the scene like in so many other shots.

This is great John. I think the composition works very well. It doesn't feel left heavy to me. The crack leading up the center of the image splits the two areas of color and makes my eye scan the entire horizon. ( If that makes sense ) These eggs make for a very interesting foreground subject. Great work.

Gosh. Once-in-a-lifetime-light and you had your camera on low-quality jpg. Could've been worse. You could've had your camera set to shoot without a memory card and had no memory card in it. This is really really nice. Beautifully handled light.

Oh, John, I feel your pain! How sad to have to back again. Seriously, though, I do feel your disappointment. If it helps to know, I once shot a whole series in the Columbia Gorge at the peak of wildflowers with Mt. Hood just crystal clear in the bg-- with the wb set on tungsten. (The symbol for it and "sunny" are a little too similar.) I've never been able to get those images quite right in processing. :frown:

Anyway, I like the shot a lot. At 1st glance I thought it was a seascape. (Really, I did.) Love the colors in it. I think your leading line works just fine; doesn't seem cramped to me, but here I probably reflect my own preferences. Nice work and good to see a post from you. It has been awhile.

P.S. Meant to ask- is the horizon line correct as is?

Thanks all! Catherine, I think the horizon is correct. I was using a level, but in all honesty I don't trust it 100%. It seems to be easy to be off a little without the level showing the problem exists.

Quite the strange place out here. I've never seen a really cohesive foreground from here but it's just so weird it always seems to work anyway. Nice catch with the light.
