Image made at about 2:00AM in ANWR where the land meets the Beufort sea. The sun was on the northern horizon lighting up the permafrost bank and the amazing clouds in the sky with the remnants of sea ice on the beach

Nikon D700
Nikor 17-35 AFS f/2.8
RAW processed in LR3 and CS5

So neat how the clouds mimic the snow. I really like the comp and light.

Nice scene with a lot of potential, but it appears oversharpened on my monitor. especially the sky.
BTW I took a peek at your website.....excellent work. :toast:

I love how the fg echoes the sky. Something wierd seems to be going on with the processing though, probably due to compression.

Beautiful sky. Like Tony, I really like the similarity between the snow and clouds.

Hello Stephen,

it's really astonishing the resemblance between the sky and the matter to the foreground. The sky gives a great depth on this photograph  and the light through this one is very sweet but she lost in quality after compression..

Fascinating image. The foreground water and the clouds provide nice compliments to each other. Something funny is going on with the clouds in the sky. I'm guessing it is just compression as well.

What a great sky! Wonderful use of the foreground patterns which seem to mimic it. Hard to find a solid foreground in a place like this but this works very well IMO.

I like the comp on this one, as well as the lines of tension all the varying elements contribute. But the water and clouds in particular seem to be over sharpened, which is easily corrected if this is the case.

Nice image, thanks for sharing,

Those cloud formations are magnificent, the lighting is perfect and the foreground snow matches the sky pretty nicely. I like the overall feel this image creates. Thanks for sharing Stephen.

Nice use of the FG, mimicks the sky very well..the clouds look pastel to me, even in the repost, though this may just be the result of extreme compression.

I still think this shot (the moment captured is great).

IMO, some things are still wrong in the development department. Sky looks kind of "hard" and the ocean water looks sharpened strangely (kind of "chunky") with a bit of a halo on the horizon line. Not sure what is going on, but the photo is so cool, I would LOVE to see it mastered!

Mark
Thank-you for your comments about this image. I really think the "development problems" you perceive stem from the process of downsizing and converting for web presentation. I did not do any sharpening on the re-post and my RAW process did not do any unusual or heavy sharpening. I ultimately judge the quality of my work by the final print and trust me a 20x24 print of this is stunning.

I think what you are seeing as "chunky water" is due to the specular highlights of very low sun angle reflecting off the water. ( the sun is just on the horizon just outside the right side of the image). I did not use a polarizer because I actually wanted this effect. Also the cloud pattern was particularly unusual, almost like cotton balls set in a stark blue sky. Again thank-you for your comments

Stephen,

Moments in time don't get much sweeter than this.. Beautiful sky and a nice treat to see "remnants" of snow on a beach... No doubt a great adventure you had this summer.
