Quiver Silhouettes

As I was making silhouettes of quiver trees and rocks in the distance, I noticed a nearby quiver tree was in my way, which gave me an idea, namely to shoot an image through this FG tree (yes, I also have an almost identical image without the FG branches… ). I figured including the typical quiver tree branches (although OOF) added another dimension of Quiver tree to this image. Would love to hear your honest opinions though.

Quiver tree (Aloe dichotoma)
Giant’s Playground, Namibia
Camera Model Canon EOS-1D Mark IV
Shutter Speed 1/2500 Sec (I was using my tripod as monopod from some precarious pose I remember and wanted a high enough SS, but this does look like over kill… )
Aperture Value f/6.3
Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
Exposure Compensation +1/3
ISO Speed 800
Lens EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
Focal Length 400.0mm

Vincent: An unconventional and I think refreshing take on this subject. Kind of like an ES&S cram shot. Well done.>=))>

I'm on the fence with this one. While I like the graphic nature of this, the OOF silhouetttes aren't working well for me. I really like the orange and black color scheme.

This is a very clever shot. I love how you used the foreground trees to create depth.

I like the silhouettes, but maybe they're bit TOO out of focus. In any case, very original, and I love the shot.

Personally, I love this photo, although I wouldn't have known what the oof branches were without a description! I think this is a very neat shot that combines abstract with reality in a creative way. :toast:

A great graphic shot. The color combo rocks, and the comp is just excellent.

Very creative approach..initially I thought you were shooting through a fence, but I see how you have cleverly incorporated the silhouettes of the Quiver trees. They must be one of the most photogenic trees about, and the rocks are obviously Giants playground for anyone that has been there.

Unique and beautiful. Excellent processing. I love this shot, and I'm sure the silhouette without the foreground branches is equally beautiful.

Very interesting and effective. I think the OOF branches work well. I think it would be easy to mess up a shot like this, but not here.

Vincent,

Love the silhouettes and color and I like the idea. I'm a little unsure about the result though. It's almost like I'm looking through a chain-link fence with the "x" on the left. The right side patterns look more like the repeating patterns of the tree in background. Still, I think a worthy image and you certainly were able to fill up the negative space pretty effectively.
