Osprey taking Flounder

Here's an image from last week. I was photographing kingfishers at my local pond when an Osprey landed in a tall tree next to the pond. All of a sudden he dove into the water right in front of me. I captured a series of images of him coming out of the water with this flounder. The start of the series he was in shade but then he flew into a bit of sunlight as he came past me. In this image he gave me a nice look. A bit of nr was applied to the bg. This is about 70% of the original frame.

To get an osprey with a fish is hard - but to get one with a flounder is just awesome (since they are, of course, bottom fish). The only "nit" (which was wholly out of your control) is I'd prefer the flounder to be the other way around so it stood out more against the water. Oh, and you could use some more room on the bottom so we could see where the fish was plucked from.

Thanks Rich

Thanks Luke, I don't have any more room on the bottom and the splash would have been quite a bit to the right.

Great action, Nate. I really like the angle of the fish and the backlight on the fin. I was going to day the head didn't pop very well, but when I looked at the larger image, it seemed to emerge nicely. :toast:

One of the things I like about this picture, Nate, is that the fish is clearly identifiable. This almost never happens for me.

sweet, Nate! great sharpness, intense look, prey, and water drops. I like the comp. I love the light on the fins but wonder if the shadow tool could get a little more detail in the body. :toast:

The head turn and the light really came together here Nate, great action capture..
Very nice handheld work, don't own the 500 but I understand it's light enough to pull off shots like this..In the right hands of course
Well done :toast:

Excellent timing on this one Nate! Love the action,,,,who wouldn't? Still waiting for my first opportunity to get one of these guys fishing. Only nit for me, is the image looks a little dark to me. Might try to bring out a bit more details in the shadows. Small nit though...very nicely done!

I thought they only made kingfishers and ducks at that pond, not osprey and flounder????
 Sweet catch here Nate! Great looking bird and detail!

Overall a great shot Nate. Really nice position of the bird and a nice look at the camera too. I have done a lot of osprey photo work and have captured a lot of images of ospreys with fish. There is of couse no way to control how the bird holds its fish. Just getting an image like this is tough enough, so no way I am going to nit pick the photographer about the fish not being in a better position. You can always hope to get the perfect position of bird and fish, but that is just chance and not based on photographic skill. Well done. Great sharpness from tip of wing to tail.

Nate, I reallly like the wing position, splayed tail, trailing water droplets and eye contact. Getting the flounder is a great touch too. Sharpness looks good on the entire bird except for motion blur on the left wing. Well done.

Great look at the action Nate, I like how you appear to be getting a stare from the osprey. I know exactly how challenging it can be to capture images of Ospreys when they are fishing. I like the side of the flounder that is presented in this image, I know it would have been a more difficult exposure if the very light, almost white belly of the flounder were facing you, besides; I like seeing the stripes on the fins.

Just beautiful. Flight shot + fish + lighting = a lot to pay attention too. You ended up with a real winner. :toast:

Never seen an Osprey fishing yet and would love to have an image like this. That is a really nice capture with the bird looking towards you and the fish clearly identifyable. I'm always amazed at the depth of field you get at f5.6 with this lens. The light on the birds body is the bonus for me it really makes the bird stand out. Looks superb in the larger version. Graham
