Evening Rocks

Hi Folks,

Thought I'd drop by with something soothing from a recent vacation. I was waiting for a merganser family to come into view hoping for some shots of the chicks. I eventually began playing with whatever else was in my viewfinder since the mergansers never came my way. Thought the colors and arrangement of the rocks might provide enough interest to hold onto this.

What do you think?

Nikon D2X, 300mm f2.8, TC-20E, 1/160s, f6.3, ISO 200 (all set up for birds :)). A little contrast & brigtness & sharpening in CS2, crop to pano.

No mergansers, but that big center rock looks just like a turtle to me. Pretty colors too. I kind of wish the rocks didn't have to go out of the frame, but that might have been hard to do. Anyways, this is nice, Julia.

I thought it might be a turtle too... or an upside down headless roasted-turkey. I like the variation in shape and colors captured here, as well as the comp. I might prefer a slight crop off the left side (about half of that dark band of rock)... That tightens this up nicely to my eye for some reason. Nicely seen!

Julia, a delightful image. Smooth, calm and great texture all in one. That 300mm is good for more than just birds. Nice job.

I like this image too Julie. I like the contrast of color between the rocks.

I was drawn to this images, because it was different. I really love the "turtle" and different textures of the rocks against the muted water. You might consider burning down the right rock, not only to provide more of a setting for the light one behind, but to keep the eye in the image, then burn them both down so they don't compete with the wonderfully patterned "star" rock.

It would be really interesting if you could return there early morning or late afternoon and avoid the harsh shadows.

Still, it is a lovely, peaceful photograph!
