Red-naped Sapsucker Male
by Julia Flanagan
Hi Folks,
Haven't posted in awhile - just too busy with the ordinary stuff of life. But snuck a vacation in an was blessed to find a nesting pair of sapsuckers in my campground. Boy these parents are absolutely tireless in bring frequent meals to their young! They were acustomed to people and cars and gave me lots of opportunity to practice and improve my skills. Overcast skies led to some low shutter speeds, but I've got some keepers. And some pretty good looks at the kinds of food they carry in their mouths. I've got one where you can zoom in to see numerous ants in his bill. I read they have sticky saliva that helps extract and hold prey. Guess that's why the ants couldn't crawl away. Also makes me glad I'm not a little sapsucker.
