I took this a few nights back from Norway Pass. What an amazing view of Mt. St. Helens! Wildflowers seemed to be in everywhere but the pass. I did my best to use one of the many blown down trees as a foreground. It's fascinating to see Spirit Lake and the surrounding area 30 years after the eruption. The white portion of the lake are blown down trees squeezed together.

A blend of 2 exposures at f/16.

Wow, that's a lot of logs. This really shows how large the blast zone was. Cool shot.

As Marc said, the down tree is a great lead in for telling a story about the area. Nice sky as well. Beautiful overall.

Great story. That blow down must be impressive up close.

Lovely light and comp. Are those still the logs that have been moving around the lake from the initial blow-down? I haven't visited here in nearly 2 decades, but it still feels like it hasn't changed much.

Wow, I thought that was ice in the lake...it's even cooler that it's logs. Great scene Justin, and nice use of the log to get the message across.

Funny thing, this thing exploded just a few days before I was born. ;]

Great photograph. Cool processing too.

Repost is much better in terms of sharpening, good work  Too bad the clouds weren't a little more symmetric, but I think you still managed to tell a convincing story.

Justin,

A wonderful shot here!!! :toast: Love the composition and how the log brings you in, as well as all the elements here.

My nits are that it looks a little HDR'ish to me. Sometimes over use of the ultra refined sharpening technique can do that (happens to me often). The other thing is that I wish the far end of the log going into the background was NOT touching the glacier. In design fundamentals/composition you learn that lines intersecting or touching each other cause tension. I think it might be improved with just a little breathing space there between the two.

Having said all that, I still think it ROCKS! :toast:

Hi Justin,

I really like this shot from you. Your processing looks great. Mt. St. Helens looks tack sharp in the background and the highlight values in the sky look well controlled. I do agree with Mark's assessment of the converging tones of the fg log and the other trees in the lake and I do also agree it is just a small nit. No big deal. I like the repost better, but I think you could darken the fg log slightly. For me, its a tad bit bright in the repost (I like the color of it better in the original) Also, I can see a small crop down on the top of the sky. Overall, extremely well executed. Outstanding work

This is very good indeed. Great composition and the repost is significantly better. For my tastes the saturation is slightly over cooked, in particular the greens, but we're talking 2-5% here. Overal a most enjoyable image.

Lovely image. The tree trunk forms nice FG element without obstructing the rest of the image.

That log jam of trees must be cool to see in a large print. Repost looks spot on to me. Nice work!

I like this image a lot, great use of FG. Maybe try cropping down from the top a bit to get rid of the uppermost section of featureless sky?
