Great Blue Heron
by Mia McPherson
Ardea herodias
I took a closeup of this Great Blue Heron in Florida, the day was clear but it was windy and the sand was blowing. I was pleasantly surprised at how close the heron came to me to take a rest, I took quite a few full body shots of this bird and then zoomed in to do some close ups.
D200, laying in the sand, handheld, f6.3, 1/1500, ISO 200, 80-400mm VR at 400mm, auto WB, aperture priority, natural light, ) EV comp. This is 48% of the original. Larger image provided for evaluation of the sharpness & detail.
I like the bit of water at the top of the frame and though it would not be too difficult to clone the water out it reminds me of all the time I spent in those waters on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. I also feel it gives a sense of place that might not be there without the water. I also like the salt encrusted bill, blowing ocipital plumes and the nice look at the eye of this heron.
As always, I sincerely appreciate your comments & critiques. They have helped me to become a better photographer.
