Zion Narrows Big Flow

Another from my visit to Zion NP June 21 - the flow rate was very high - 99 CFS that day. They had just opened the Narrows the previous week as the flow rate was coming down from the spring thaw.

Canon 5DII
16-35 2.8L @ 16mm
F11
0.6 sec
ISO 400

the left side is a hair soft as that's the nature of my 16-35 mm at 16 mm. I've got to learn to zoom in just a hair to prevent that. Please see the large version for more detail.

I think the cool cast works well in some spots in this photo, but in general there would be an improvement to the photo, in my opinion, by neutralizing it to a great extent. The high flowing water makes wonderful textures in the foreground where normally boulders are required to anchor a composition.

Try it at f/16 instead of f/11. You'll likely see improvement with the softness on that side. My 16-35 was unusable at the supposed 'sweet spot' of most lenses, f/9 through f/13 due to problems with the left side. You could also send it back for recalibration, which might work 50% of the time at best. The shot here is in-your-face action combined with some nice reflected color. I definitely like it.

I like the low perspective and in your face flow Wick. While I expect to see some blues in the shadows I think this image could benefit by pulling back the blue tones in the shadows & water.

This is lovely, Wick. My preference would be for it to be a bit warmer color-wise, but what you have is very accurate, and the intensely blue water is quite pleasing.
