Canon 10D   600mm f4 is, x1.4, 1/1000s, f5.6.

My main camera body is being repaired hence I had to to drag out the antique! These are the most comical creatures. They usually catch sand eels which are a lot smaller than this sprat - he seems to be saying "my last one was even bigger!"

It may be an antique, but it certainly works well under your hand. This is one of my favorite birds. Nice job.

A beautiful capture! Just love the gradient background and open wings.
Your picture is an example that an antique can deliver in the hands of expert photographer but top notch camera may fail to deliver in the hands of a novice. :jump:

The 10D still works huh? The LCD screen on that thing must be about 1" wide!

Wonderful pohto with nice splashes of color and a good pose. Do you have to travel far for these birds? Or are they in your relative backyard?

Thanks all!

About an hour's drive and an hour on a boat to get to one of the most important seabird islands in Europe. First time for me and certainly not the last!

Antique or no, Ian, a great capture. I would suggesting cutting back on the exposure on the very white parts of the rock since they appear to distract from the bird.

And the bird is marvelous.

Ian, this is terrific! I hope Canon UK will be able to get your camera back to you in a click!

I'll be sure to make this trip next year!

A puffin telling a fish story - the description fits. Great detail in the whites and a fantastic BG.

Ian,

Love the great pose, the sprat in the bill, your exposure, natural colors, sharpness, details and the wonderful colors in the background.

The only thing I might do differently is the crop. The OOF rock close to the bottom edge of the frame does pull my eyes down away from the delightful puffin. I would crop about 200 250 pixels from the bottom of the larger image to minimize the rock and emphasize the puffin. It is a fine & appealing image as presented, the change in the crop may make it have even more impact
