Kingfisher Perch Battle

by Peter Conway

Gallery: AvianPosted July 14, 2010286 views19 comments
Mark IV, 800mm, ISO 800, f/7.1, 1/320th, natural light

I posted this along with some other photos in the Avian Forum the other day as I think they are most interesting viewed as a series. It was suggested that I post one here in the gallery also, so I chose my favorite of them. The KF on the right has closed its nictitating membrane to protect its eyes from attack.

It was a rainy day and I was set up for slower action when all of this happened. I wish I would have been at a higher ISO and higher shutter speed but there was no chance of making those adjustments and it was over.

Comments appreciated.

Peter

An impressive series, and a good choice for the presentation here in Avian.

Definitely one of the best from your series, Peter. The poses are perfect and the quality hasn't suffered significantly from the shutter speed. :toast:

This is a great action photo. It lead me to your post in the Avian Forum, which was also great. Thanks for sharing.

great action shot, Peter, and great poses. I agree, one of the best in a great series. great sharpness on the left bird, and a beautiful bg is a big bonus for an already special shot.

Very nice results under rainy & not-so-great conditions, the slower s-speed shows movement in the bird RT that works..Excellent job of capturing this cool interaction, really like it :toast:

Sweet action and a great bg for it too Peter. The nictating membrane adds some interest to this image too. :toast:
