Kaikoura, New Zealand

This is what you get when you cross a landscape photographer with an albatross. I a wider shot on the avian forum too and have a few other worthwhile shots. This one shows the alps in the background in late afternoon light.

Canon 5DMkII, 24-105mm 4L at 24mm, ISO 400, f7.1, 1/800, polarizer.

Amazing shot. How the heck did you get this perspective? How big is this bird? :toast: :toast: :toast:

Kah Kit, amazingly sharp and a very unique aspect, did he peck your lens, you must have been very close, both to the albatross AND the water....
Nice one my friend..

Great perspective - can't believe he let you get so close! Never thought of albatrosses as being a pretty bird, but I love the pale color on it's beak.

The size difference between this bird and the others is really impressive (exaggerated I'm sure by the wide angle) and the lighting is really nice.

I don't think this is an ESS shot since the bird is very much the main focus of this image.

I'm always amazed at how close you can get to an albatross, great use of the wide angle on this bird, and I love the soft light on the water too.

Kah Kit,

You testing me? Sorry, but I felt this is better suited here in Avian. You mentioned you had posted a wider view here, but I can't find it. If there already was one, I probably wouldn't move it. Hope you understand. Thanks!

This is pretty wild, and in your face! Are you sure this isn't a composite? That albatross relative to the other birds is the size of a small ostrich! whew! Great catch however it was done.

An eye-grabbing image. I always enjoy these close wide angle views of birds since we see so few of them.

I like the variety of colors of blue shown in the sky and water, feels cool and remote. Neat perspective. The water the main Albatross is on almost appears raised, unusual. Is it a composite as Lon asked???

One of the main reasons I don't shoot birds very much, is because in order to do so, you often need very long lenses and you end up with just the subject and maybe a branch, leaf, or part of a tree trunk - and that's it. The great thing about this shot is that you have the subject large in the frame, while at the same time show a lot of the environment. Very nice!

That said, the gull does look incredibly large, and the sky looks very over processed to me. Too much highlight recovery?

Just to make clear, this is not a composite. The albatross is a much larger bird than the petrels, emphasised by its proximity and wide angle.
Marsel, I did some highlight recovery at the horizon but the clouds are pretty much the way that they were, a bit strange looking.
