Taking advice received I again attempted to photograph blue birds at the Sugar Grove Nature Center.

Canon T1i
1/1250 @f-9 ISO 400 +0.3 adjustment
Sigma 150-500 @ 500mm
AV, stabilization off, tripod and cable release.
Bright sun, slight breeze.

This looks quite a bit better than your last effort John. The detail and sharpness look pretty good. I'd try to get out there either early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is sweeter as it looks a bit harsh in this image. :toast:

Nice pose you caught, and I like the bug in the beak. I agree with Nate on needing more diffused light. Early and late in the day as Nate said, but I also like the light on a cloudy day. :toast:

Much better results. Good sharpness. I agree about the light and time-of-day.

I agree - much better John. Sharpness looks good and I like the apparent bug in the beak. There's a significant halo around the bird - easy to get against that blue sky. Also relatively easy to prevent by selective sharpening of the bird and perch only.

Nice sharpness, better results but I'd still suggest early morning or late afternoon light. Agree about the halo though that can be corrected in postprocessing so it does not appear.

Very good details John, love that bug-n-beak. Interesting perch too. It kinda compliments the somewhat motley appearance of the bird in partial molt? Great blue BG,
Well done :toast:
