For me this is one of the best GBH images I've seen in a good long while. I love the dynamics of the positions of the wing and feet combined with all those water droplets. The light is wonderful, as are the colors. The wing detail is excellent as is your composition. To my eye the head and upper neck aren't quite as sharp as the rest of the bird but that's very minor in a shot like this with such a gangly bird with body parts strewn all about. Very nice Ronnie.

Great pose, super sharp, great light - just about perfectly captured and composed, Ronnie. The splash, and reflections of background vegetation add lot of interest to this image. A great look at the underwing.

Thanks for sharing this. :toast:

Beautiful! I really like the way the early morning light play on the bird. Great pose, water droplets, BG, all of it. :toast:

Ronnie, this is great. I love the action. It looks like the focus might have been on the upper part of the wing, but not a deal breaker in this action shot. The light is fantastic. Well done!!

Nice light; great action.

Is the splash where the heron took off, or did it hit the water before landing?

Killer action with lighting to boot. One of the better GBH photos I've seen as it's unique.

Hi Richard,
That is where he took off from. A few seconds before he had launched from that stump to go after a fish. He obviously missed the catch and was returning to his perch. I had been waiting an hour for him to attempt a catch and he went and missed. I ran out of patience and left. By that time the light was beginning to get too bright for me. I was aleady above my cutoff point of -1 exposure compensation. When I need -1 or more of compensation I'm going back to the house.

lots to like about this shot, Ronnie, despite the brightness of the light (which you handled well). I like the pose, the water droplets, the great colors and reflections in the water, and especially the comp. I agree that the head looks a bit softer, but not a big deal.

Nice action captured and the timing is perfect in my opinion to get the feet extended and the water splash.

Terrific capture: frozen motion, great detail, Ronnie. Might be a little on the dark side. However, I bet it's the best that can be done at 1/4000 s while showing such nice detail in direct sunlight. I can see a bit of the sharpness variability mentioned by others. However, I think it's fine as is.
