Mountain Bluebird
by Ron Dudley
We found this female and her mate busily feeding fledglings on the ground in the back country of the San Rafael Swell of central Utah on 6/3/10. Here she was changing her position on the precarious perch, thus the pose. I tried to get the busy background as OOF as possible but it was pretty close to the bird.
Between the substantial crop and busy background I'm not sure of the overall strength of the image but I liked the pose well enough to run it by all of you to see what you think.
Larger version provided.
7D, 1/1600, f/5.6, ISO 800, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, tripod, adjusted exposure slightly in ACR, cropped to 45% of original image, NR to background in CS4 (first time I've ever tried it), sharpening to most of the bird, no additional adjustments/processing, natural light

26 commentsLove the pose. Great feather detail and sharpness and you even got some catch light in the eye. I don't mind the twigs in the background at all. Very natural setting. The noise reduction worked well as I see no sign of background noise. Nice first attempt Ron. Way to go.

Like the pose this one struck for you. The little patch of blue near the tail is a nice addition to the image. I do find the background a bit too much. I think if those sticks were more out of focus it would not be so objectional. In the large image I can still see some noise. I honestly think you could have been more aggressive with the noise removal of the background only. Besides removing the little noise remaining, it might also cause more blurring of those sticks. I would also try to darken those sticks to make them blend in better with the background.
Thanks for posting,
Ronnie G.

I like this beautiful image as posted. Really nice!
You already know that I think this is a fine image so I will repeat myself and say yet again "this is fine image".
Love the pose, the background, light, sharpness and detail.
I like the pose, the patch of blue (dating myself here, but remember the movie with Sidney Poitier and Shelley Winters with this title?), and DOF. I think you heard this from Mia, but it's a fine image. I agree with the suggestion to be a tad more aggressive with the BG noise reduction. The sharpness gradient seen as you move from the head to the tip of the upraised wing is very nice.
This photo has a certain "Audubon" feel to it; very nice.
