Red-bellied Woodpecker

I think the Red-bellied Woodpecker is the most common, loudest and most aggressive woodpecker we have in the Chicago area. I was photographing a Scarlet Tanager and this guy flew in to see what was going on. He landed on a dead tree with much evidence of his past presence (holes) and the green leaves are Poison Ivy! You can just see some light red on his belly which is where his name comes from. The dead tree was leaning dangerously to the right and he hung almost upside down. I rotated the photo so we wouldn't get sick viewing it.

Thanks for looking and for your comments and suggestions.

Hi Hans,
Good looking shot of this species. Very nice lighting and image clarity. Love the background. My only nit is the loss of details in the white breast feathers.
Thanks for posting,

Hans, nice pose, perch, bg. I think I would have liked to see the original precarious angle.

Excellent, Hans. Great capture of a classic Red-bellied pose. I think I've gotten into that poison ivy.

Very nice pose and detail, except as noted in the breast. Thanks for posting. Good thing he didn't run into a Blackhawk!!!
