Spring Trees

I went backpacking with a friend over Memorial Day in the Hetch Hetchy area which is close to Yosemite. Rather than sitting in traffic Monday, I stayed an extra night and explored Yosemite for the first time. It's quite a place. I can see what it's so popular w/ photographers -- there's a grand view almost anywhere you look.

50mm, ISO 400, 1/60 at f/8, handheld from the top of a fallen log :). Slightly larger version included.

Nice lighting and an interesting backdrop that provides some scale. I feel any dodge/burning could be evened out slightly, but then again, I like vignettes too.

Thanks, Marc. Will give that a try. There's a mangled branch in the LLC that I wanted to hide, so I may have too aggressively vignetted to hide it.

Beautiful, Mke! This reminds that there's always another photo opt in Yosemite NP.
I've photographed there often but never seen this scenic. I'm looking forward to more
of your posts.

Mike,

Nice to see a post from you. This is a fabulous capture from the valley. Got me stumped to as to where this is located. I want to say behind Yosemite Lodge area, Leidig meadow area?

Now this doesn't happen very often, but I think the smaller version looks much better than the larger one. The color, contrast and luminosity are all wonderful. But I think the larger version a softer and probably suffering a bit from compression to. Regardless though, I really love this image and kudos for coming up with something that you don't see very often from Yosemite.

Glad you got a chance to spend some time there. I'm guessing you'll be going back.

I'm glad you made it into the valley before you leave. Once again I like the spring leaves almost being fall like.

Very nice! The yellow leaves work very well against the massive granite wall. Nice intimate portait of the valley.

Thanks all!

Lon, this was actually taken a little bit east of the Cathedral Beach area. The yellowish tree was on the south side of the merced, the other trees are on the north side. I agree with you about the quality of the large image -- I had to reduce the JPEG quality quite a bit to get it <500KB. I guess it kind of defeats the purpose of uploading a large image at that point :).

Definitely will be back!

Really pretty. Excellent job on the composition and what a great array of spring colors against a beautiful granite wall.

Hey, Mike.

You know they say that area is just as spectacular as Yosemite Valley. We just can't see most of it cause it'a under water. This had me thinking it was from the Valley, but not recognizeable as to where. It is the same, but somehow slightly different, if that makes sense? I think you have a nice capture here with beautiful tones throughout.

Very well done composition Mike! I like how this tree stands out. The texture of the granite is great to explore too.

Very well seen, Mike. I like the smaller version better because the large one feels oddly soft - almost like an upscaled smaller version. I hope this was just a technical problem and the shot isn't that soft actually.

Very unique take on Yosemite. The comp is strong with the newly leaved tree being a strong focal point.

Nice isolation of this tree against that granite background. The spring colors here are beautiful.
